Huntsville, Alabama – home of NASA, Rocket Scientist Werner Von Braun, The US Space & Rocket Center, Redstone Arsenal and King Cotton – provides many stories that are locally inspired but that are often of national interest as well. Topics include current Mayor Tommy Battle, The Historic Huntsville Depot, and picturesque Big Spring Park.

The News Today About Tomorrow

A few weeks ago I published a column discussing the apocalyptic advance of all things digital. The column highlights the recent decision by the Huntsville Times to follow a three day hardcopy publishing schedule beginning sometime this fall. In the column I chastise The Huntsville Times and Al.com for being impetuous in their publishing decisions: […]

Huntsville’s Race For Mayor

Many of you know I ran for mayor, legitimately and officially on the ballot, in 2000 and 2004. I regret my effort fell short, largely due to limited campaign funds, and a compromised posture that really didn’t allow me to ramp up heavy duty fundraising and campaign. As you know, Loretta Spencer is embarrassing herself […]

Huntsville’s Gestapo

Growing up and living in Huntsville I’ve always heard it said: The police department is a Gestapo. For the most part, I just figured someone who done something wrong and got caught had become disgruntled. Over the years, however, I have slowly, sadly, and surely come to another conclusion. That’s based on a couple of […]

The News Yesterday About Today

Did you know Huntsvillian? When you picked up this Tuesday morning’s hardcopy of the Huntsville Times, it was printed in Birmingham and shipped to Huntsville overnight! This new reality was announced yesterday in the Huntsville Times and in the wake of the announcement a few weeks ago that publication of the Times will go to […]

NCAC Folly And Corruption

Response to E. Chris Newlin, executive director National Children’s Advocacy Center re: Letter To The Editor; Huntsville Times, June 6, 2012 The bottom line, Mr(s). Newlin, is for whatever apparently ineffective good the NCAC accomplishes, it is already deeply involved in“politically correct” child molestation on more than one level. Apparently, you’ve taken your cues from […]

Thirty Pesos For Grinch

I have to admit I was a little surprised this week when Alabama voted for Rick Santorum. It was only in the last two weeks that he showed himself to be a religious nutcase when he challenged remarks by John F. Kennedy asserting separation of church and state, and his disinclination to take orders from […]

Lee High School Bus Crash Conspiracy

REVISION (2014.06.07): It should be noted that State of Alabama DOT officials have never explained publicly why they removed EVERY gate from ALL fenced areas under the elevated portions of I565 in Huntsville, from Oakwood Ave. to Jordan Lane, three months before the Lee Bus Massacre. The removal of the gate on Church Street did facilitate fast access to the bus crash and the victims, however, prescience seems to be indicated.

Huntsville Homeless Icon “Howard” Is Dead

What was believed to be Howard’s remains were found by Huntsville police about two weeks ago at his residence off of Cleveland Avenue in downtown Huntsville. At the time, media reports indicated that a positive ID was still pending because he had apparently been dead for two to four weeks prior to being found. I was told a few days later by a media representative that there was uncertainty as to whether or not foul play had been a factor, also owing to the condition of the remains.
