The City of Huntsville has been hemming and hawing about the old City Hall building on Fountain Circle for years. The marble facade, they say, is difficult to maintain and the building is too old and too small to renovate. So, the iconic structure is set to come down.
In order to make way for the new and modernized seven story City Hall, the parking deck across the street has been removed creating the fleeting view in the panorama above. Construction on the new nearly $80 million building should begin as quickly as the remnants of the demolished municipal parking garage are cleared and will take two to three years to complete including a new parking garage.
Road closures and alternate parking areas are part of the process so anyone with business to conduct downtown and especially at City Hall should be prepared to spend a little extra time finding their way around.
