The bill expanding police immunity, sponsored by former Huntsville police chief Rex Reynolds, Rep. Huntsville, has gained committee approval in the Alabama house. According to media sources the bill is supported by Republican legislative leadership and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey.
The legislation would place an onerous step in the process of holding Police accountable for their criminal wrongdoing – including excessive use of force. In essence it denies due process to the victims by letting an obviously corrupt system of judges head off any attempt to enforce police accountability. The job of a preliminary hearing to determine the potential viability of charges is up to a grand jury made up of randomly chosen citizens.
It’s hard to imagine a bill like this could even come up, even in Alabama, after the exposure of criminal wrongdoings by police in Alabama and the nation in recent years. It’s so obtuse, it can only be reckoned as a nod to President Trumps apparent intent to expand unconstitutional neo-Naziism.
Ending the unconstitutional affirmative action programs necessarily in place for the last fifty years is also a necessary step to ensure democratic survival of our nation. Retaliation, enabling militaristic police, and advancing the enforcement of neo-Nazi protocols – is not. Donald Trump and the State of Alabama should be seeking to prosecute the domestic war criminals that exploited the system instead.
In most recent years, after the most exuberant protests against corrupt law-enforcement lead by the Black Lives Matter movement, it actually appeared that over-exuberant police calmed down to more appropriately tempered action. Emboldening the police to return to criminal enforcements is the wrong thing to do.
