Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle Goes Rideabout! Bike Ride And Historic Preservation In Huntsville

Huntsville Mayor Battle was leading the pack today as he biked around downtown Huntsville on a four mile course in honor of Historic Preservation Month. Mayor Battle recently declared May to be Huntsville Historic Preservation Month in conjunction with the already established national observance.

I don’t usually pay much attention to the bike ride but after discovering Mayor Battle is a distance cousin it seemed to be all the more historic. The recent walkabouts that I’ve already done have a historic bent that got me started looking at the genealogy stuff. I found some interesting connections to Huntsville history that I didn’t know I had. One connection I was already aware of is that Robert H. Goddard is a also a distant cousin. He is the famous Goddard of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center who is considered to be the father of modern rocketry, and of course an important component of Huntsville Space history.

So, to continue honor historic preservation and history in Huntsville, I’ll be exploring some more of the historic connections I have to Huntsville in the next few weeks. Tune in to watch!
